Uncensored Satellite Transmission to China
Point of Contact: Isabelle Chaigneau, tel: +33 6 24 30 66 55
Summary: The satellite transmission of New Tang Dynasty Television, the only non-governmental
channel freely reaching Chinese viewers via satellite in the Chinese language, is being terminated
next week by EUTELSAT, S.A. in violation of European and international conventions. EUTELSAT has
come under strong political and commercial pressures from the Government of China to terminate
this broadcast, in gross violation of the company's inter-governmental charter requiring EUTELSAT
to provide universal service, equal access, and respect for pluralism.
Advocates of press freedom believe this is an important test case for free expression and universal
free flow of information, as guaranteed under United Nations and European conventions.
