Global Conference on Renewable Energy Approaches for Desert Regions (GCREADER)

Global Conference on Renewable Energy Approaches for Desert Regions (GCREADER) www.ju.edu.jo/confernces/gcreader/index.htm

Amman, Jordan, 18-22 September 2006

The conference is aiming at encouraging thoughtful discussions regarding the application of Renewable Energies to satisfy the needs of the population for energy, water and food in the desert regions and to supply other parts of the world with electricity.

It is being organized by the University of Jordan and is supported by several international and national organizations under the patronage of His Majesty, King Abdulla II of Jordan. Four ministers have already agreed to attend the conference.

In his welcome address, international chairman, Dr. N. El Bassam, Germany, states: "Current approaches to energy are limited, and non renewable and therefore unsustainable. Without adequate attention to the critical importance of energy to all these aspects, the global social, economic and environmental goals of sustainability can not be achieved.

Power and water from desert regions? Yes! The desert supplies us now with non-renewable energy resources, oil and gas, and can continue to supply the world population with the required energy by means of renewable energy approaches.

The sun is supplying the region with energy equivalent to 250 litres of oil per square meter every year. Large areas of desert land can be used to collect this energy to drive solar thermal, photovoltaic, geothermal, wind generators and other systems. Along the desert shorelines of North Africa and the Middle East, salt water can be desalinated to satisfy the human needs and to develop agriculture and other businesses.

Renewable Energies are the only options for the future. Otherwise civilization continues to run into the fossil and atomic energy trap. We must act while we still have choices. This will be well illustrated at the conference."

A public day for every body has been planned to encourage the population to learn and discuss the importance of renew-able energy technologies for their future. The exhibition will be an important part of the conference to demonstrate the latest technological developments.

The conference committee invites you all: scientists, experts, students, companies, politicians and authorities to participate and to introduce and discuss their science, knowledge, experience, technologies and approaches for the benefit of mankind. Come and enjoy the hospitality of the Kingdom of Jordan!
